Dark, milk, or white chocolate. Which one has the most fans?

Chocolate is one of the most universal pleasures, and although we all love it, not all chocolates are the same. Depending on the percentage of cocoa, we can find several types of chocolate that offer different flavor experiences.

  • Dark chocolate

This is the favorite of pure cocoa lovers. It generally has a cocoa percentage ranging from 50% to 100%. The higher the percentage, the more bitter the taste and the less sugar it contains. A 70% cocoa chocolate, for example, already has an intense flavor, while chocolates with 90% or more are for true aficionados who enjoy intensity.

  • Milk chocolate

It is the most popular in many parts of the world. It contains between 30% and 50% cocoa, and its flavor is milder thanks to the milk and higher sugar content. It is perfect for those looking for a sweet and creamy experience.

  • White chocolate

Technically, it is not "real" chocolate because it does not contain cocoa solids. It is made mainly from cocoa butter, sugar, and milk, which gives it that light color and a very sweet and mild flavor.

When buying chocolate in Spain, milk chocolate is the most popular, following a global trend. Its smoothness and sweetness make it a favorite, especially among children and teenagers. Dark chocolate, although gaining fans, especially among those looking for healthier options or those with less sugar, remains in second place in terms of popularity. White chocolate, although it has its fans, is the least consumed of the three.

As for their formats, the usual form is chocolate bars, although chocolates are a treat that very few can resist.

Globally, Spain is not one of the leading countries in chocolate consumption, although its love for drinking chocolate and chocolate bars is remarkable. Spaniards consume around 3.5 kg of chocolate per person per year, a figure that may seem high, but is far from that of major consumers such as Switzerland, where more than 10 kg per person per year is eaten. Other countries such as Germany, Austria, and Belgium also surpass Spain in terms of the amount of chocolate consumed.
